Mayor LaToya Cantrell of
New Orleans, Louisiana
presented a Certificate
of Recognition for the
involvement in 1891 by
Mayor Shakspeare and
members of the White
League in the lynching
of Italian men who had
either been acquitted or
never tried for the
murder of Police Chief
Hennessey. The
Certificate of
Recognition also thanked
the Italian / Sicilian
Community for its
contributions to New
Orleans which began with
arrivals in the 1830s on
boats carrying lemons.
The ceremony occurred on
April 12th, 2019 at the
American Italian
Cultural Center in New
Orleans, Louisiana.
